Biopesticides are an important group of pesticides that can reduce pesticide risks. Biopesticides, in general:
* Have a narrow target range and a very specific mode of action;
* Are slow acting;
* Have relatively critical application times;
* Suppress, rather than eliminate, a pest population;
* Have limited field persistence and a short shelf life;
* Are safer to humans and the environment than conventional pesticides;
* Present no residue problems.

The two types of biopesticides are biochemical and microbial.

Biochemical pesticides may have a similar structure to, and function like, naturally occurring chemicals, and have nontoxic modes of action. Insect pheromones, for example, are naturally-occurring chemicals that insects use to locate mates. Man-made pheromones are used to disrupt insect mating by creating confusion during the search for mates, or can be used to attract male insects to traps. Pheromones are often used to detect or monitor insect populations, or in some cases, to control them.

Microbial insecticides are another kind of biopesticide. They come from naturally-occurring or genetically altered bacteria, fungi, algae, viruses or protozoans.

They suppress pests by:
* Producing a toxin specific to the pest;
* Causing a disease;
* Preventing establishment of other microorganisms through competition; or
* Other modes of action.

An example of a microbial pesticide is Bacillus thuringiensis, or "Bt." Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring soil bacteria that is toxic to the larvae of several species of insects but not toxic to nontarget organisms. Bacillus thuringiensis can be applied to plant foliage or incorporated into the genetic material of crops. Bacillus thuringiensis, as discovered, is toxic to the caterpillars (larvae) of moths and butterflies. Several strains of Bt have been developed and now strains are available that control fly larvae. These can be used in controlling mosquitoes and blackflies.

Sex Pheromones: Adult female insects that are ready for mating, emit species-specific chemical odours to attract males. This method of utilising pheromones - produced by insects for their procreation - as tools for their destruction, was introduced by us. Lab-synthesised pheromones are specially packed and supplied as lures, to be used along with suitable traps to deceive, attract and trap male insects.
Monitoring: Installation of traps with suitable pheromone lures @ 2-3 per acre can provide information on pest incidence and intensity in agricultural fields. Based on the number of males caught, the timing and frequency of control measures can be determined.

The entomopathogen invades the insect body. Fungal conidia become attached to the insect cuticle and, after germination, the hyphae penetrate the cuticle and proliferate in the insect's body. The infected insect may live for three to five days after hyphal penetration and, after death, the conidiophores bearing conidia are produced on cadaver. The fungus is insect specific.
Used as foliar sprays. Application rates depend upon the crop and the pests to be controlled. The normal application rate on commodity crops is 750 to 1000 ml of product per hectare, for ornamentals under cover or outdoors 24 to 80 ml per 10 litres and on turf and lawns 32 to 96 ml per 100 square metres.

SPODOCOP is another strain of nuclear polyhedrosis virus which works against yet another deadly pest Spodoptera litura of cotton, soybean and other oilseed crops.
Spodoptera litura is more active on small larvae than later larval instars. The virus is ingested by the feeding larva and the protective protein matrix is dissolved in the alkaline insect midgut, releasing the virus particles. These pass through the peritrophic membrane and invade midgut cells by fusion with the microvilli. The virus particles invade the cell nuclei, where they are uncoated and replicated. Initial replication produces non-occluded virus particles to hasten the invasion of the host insect but later the virus particles are produced with protein matrices and remain infective when released from the dead insects.
As with all insect baculoviruses, Spodoptera litura SPODOCOP NPV must be ingested to exert an effect. Following ingestion, the virus enters the insect's haemolymph where it multiplies in the insect body, leading to insect death. Please also see HELICOP.
Spodoptera litura acts relatively slowly as it has to be ingested and infect before it exerts any effect on the insect host. It is important to ensure good cover of the foliage to effect good control. Monitoring of adult insect laying patterns and targeted application at newly hatched eggs gives better control than on a mixed population.

VERCITILE is another friendly fungus Verticillium lecanii based formulation. The fungus inserts its mycelium thru the body wall of all stages of insects and kills the insects by infecting it.
The death of the insect occurs because of release of certain toxic elements like Destraksin Desmethyl, Destraksin etc. which kill the hardy stage like pupae of the insects.
Verticillium lecanii (formerly known as Cephalosporum lecanii) was first described in 1861 and is a cosmopolitan fungus found on insects. It is a common pathogen of scale insects in tropical and subtropical climates. V. lecanii is known as a "white-halo" fungus because of the white mycelial growth on the edges of infected scale insects. The conidia (spores) of V. lecanii are slimy and attach to the cuticle of insects. The fungus infects insects by producing hyphae from germinating spores that penetrate the insect's integument; the fungus then destroys the internal contents and the insect dies.
The fungus eventually grows out through the cuticle and sporulates on the outside of the body. Infected insects appear as white to yellowish cottony particles. Diseased insects usually appear in 7 days. However, due to environmental conditions, there may be some considerable lag time from infection to death of insects. V. lecanii works best at temperatures of 15 to 25°C and a relative humidity of 85 to 90%. The fungus needs high humidity for at least 10 to 12 hours. This can be a problem as many plant pathogenic fungi (e.g. Botrytis) favor these same environmental conditions. V. lecanii spores are damaged by ultra-violet radiation. In greenhouses, heating pipes may reduce the effectiveness of the fungus, because this creates a microclimate where the air is drier and humidity is lower. In addition, V. lecanii is generally not useful in interiorscapes due the low humidity conditions in these environments.
The fungal mycelium of V. lecanii produces a cyclodepsipeptide toxin called bassianolide, which has been shown to kill silkworm. The fungus produces other insecticidal toxins such as dipicolinic acid. The activity of V. lecanii depends on the strain of the fungus. V. lecanii strains with small spores infect aphids, whereas fungal strains with large spores infect whiteflies. Certain strains have also been reported to be pathogenic on rust fungi.
Higher doses of the fungus result in faster kill. Virulence depends on the density of spores and rate of sporulation, which is dependent on environmental conditions. Fungal virulence varies with the method of conidial production. Less virulent conidia are obtained from fermented media as compared to shaken liquid or solid media. Formulated products from conidial production can last up to 1 year. These products are easy to wet and dilute for spraying. Also, the fungus can stick to the surface of leaves and host insects. Studies have shown that combining entomopathogenic fungi with an insecticide may enhance its performance as the fungi create wounds that makes it easier for the insecticide to enter the insect.
